Benefits for Farmers

  • Up to 60% subsidy provided by the central and state governments.

  • Bank loan facility available for remaining cost.

  • Zero fuel cost – farmers save money otherwise spent on diesel or electricity bills.

  • Extra income source – by selling surplus power to DISCOMs.

  • Promotes sustainable agriculture and reduces carbon emissions.

Why PM-KUSUM Matters

This scheme is a win-win for farmers and the environment. It reduces electricity demand on the grid, cuts down diesel usage, and helps India move towards its renewable energy goals while empowering rural communities.

Components of PM-KUSUM

  • Component A – Setting up decentralized grid-connected renewable power plants (up to 2 MW capacity) on barren or cultivable land.

  • Component B – Installation of standalone solar pumps to reduce dependency on diesel pumps.

  • Component C – Solarization of existing grid-connected pumps, allowing farmers to use solar power for irrigation and sell excess power to the grid.

PM-KUSUM Solar Scheme

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) is a Government of India initiative launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to promote the use of solar energy in agriculture. It aims to provide farmers with reliable, clean, and affordable power, while reducing their dependence on diesel and conventional electricity.

Key Objectives

  • To reduce the burden of electricity costs for farmers.

  • To promote renewable energy adoption in rural areas.

  • To ensure energy security and support India’s clean energy targets.

  • To provide farmers an opportunity to earn additional income by selling surplus solar power to the grid.
